Cheltenham Artist Claire Sanders

"I was born Claire Wetherstone in 1967, in Cheltenham. I can always remember having an interest in arts and crafts: I liked to draw, firstly copying pictures out of books and magazines when I was a child. As a teenager I started adding colour to me pictures using watercolours and pastels.

Whilst working for a local engineering company, I hand-painted T-shirts, and had many commissions from colleagues wanting pictures of their pets or hobbies put onto the T-shirts. Changing careers, and working at Cheltenham General Hospital for 8 years, I was asked to paint one of the staff rooms, creating a mural of a brick wall with a window, looking out into a meadow.

I have also painted other murals in bedrooms and bathrooms; one being a jungle for the eldest of my two young sons; this involved painting through the whole room, including walls, ceiling and even some of the furniture! Other projects have included murals in the theme of 'fairies at the bottom of the garden', and 'Romans sitting on columned walls'.

I have now started to develop different textures, using brush and pallet knives with acrylics and mixed media onto canvas. I find this very exciting and rewarding. I hope you do too.
