Artist John Skelton

I was brought up on a large country estate south of Gloucester and lived an idyllic childhood. My father worked in the estate office so we lived in what was the court stable flats on the estate. Being able to wander and play on the estate brought me in touch with nature from my earliest memories, so I learnt quickly to appreciate its perfection in light, shade, colour, harmony and moods.

I had a natural ability, even at five years old, to be able to copy images with accurate detail.

Self taught, I moved into oil painting as a hobby in my teens and was able to sell quite a few before venturing into the business world of graphics. Having recently retired early I now have chance to paint once again and took it up again 2 years ago, but this time using acrylic to avoid the fumes associated with oil paint thinners, and also sparing my wife the side-effects she used to put up with. However, I am now experimenting with water-based oils as I loved their blending qualities.

I paint anything that motivates me and even take on portrait commissions. I have also produced ''copies'' of famous paintings for other clients who wished to have an artists copy of their favourite picture. However, most of my work is original and usually reflect light, colour, mood, movement and harmony, in as true to life as my ability and style lets me. Even a garden shed has a beauty when the surroundings are coloured by light. Just the enjoyment of painting is enough, but I have been thrilled that people have made generous comments about my work.
